Checkups, Teeth Cleanings and Eye Appts. before SHTF
I've spent the last few weeks getting myself and the kids up to date on all our healthcare appts. I figured with all that is going on it was best to have everyone squared away with dental, eye doctor and physicals, etc. It is really easy to let some of the health maintenance slide until problems come up but I decided that it was time to make the rounds to all the appts. especially while we still have our private health insurance.
It took a chunk out of my funds but I consider it money well spent. One son needed glasses, another is going to get his wisdom teeth out shortly. I ended up having a root canal this morning. No fun but it feels good to get it all out of the way now and not worry about SHTF and kicking myself for not doing it while I could have. If you've got any loose ends to tie up as far as healthcare issues its a good idea to take care of it now before Lord Obama saves the healthcare system. |

I had serious problems with my choppers because I was lazy and paid a terrific price (root canals, fillings, periodonatal surgery etc)
But after one loses their insurance........ that is a great motivator to stay on point so I got three new habbits: 1) I use The floss stripps (not the wax string) they look like a single "guitar strings they are very convient because you can use them anywhere and can be placed in the mouth like a toothpick ( I use them often when stuck in traffic) 90% of tooth problems orginate at the gumb line ........keep your gumbs clean!!! 2) There are a million types of toothpaste but I make my own I use baking soda and sea salt THATS IT The salt is and abbrasive and stops any wounds from bleeeding and the baking soda is a oxydizing agent which is a powerful way to kill bacteria because your mouth in a anaerobic enviroment in which the thrive . 3) I use a collidial silver spray ......two sprays in the morning and two before I go to sleep it is has done extensive work to repair my gumbline after years of neglect. Between the three when I went for my last cleaning the dentist could not believe the turn around in my mouth. T |

Baking soda, sea salt, and a hydrogen peroxide pre-rinse work well for me.
And once in a blue moon, I'll brush with homemade bar soap. Keep your mouth as acid free as possible by having a sip of water after you eat. |

I am very [HA-omit] tonight but let me tell you a dental story. I go to the dentist often enough but omit the fluoride polish.
Well during my last visit, she really wanted to resume buffering my teeth, which I had refused for a few years now. She asked me if I would like raw pumice instead of fluoride. What is raw pumice? It is the grit that is in the fluoride paste! She made a paste by adding drops of mouthwash. I got the polish and my teeth have NEVER FELT CLEANER in my life!! It was about three weeks ago and they still feel GREAT! That fluoride polish was never very good! It didn't even feel clean when it was done! Life was better refusing it. But this buff-job with raw pumice is the only thing I want from now on!:ok: Totally analog. |

My family goes to Tijuana for dental stuff. The dentist lives in San Diego and has his practice in Tijuana. Half the price of what it costs in the US. And no, it's not some run down, unsanitary backroom. The place is nice.

Forgot to mention that while at the dentist for the root canal I managed to get Rx's for an antibiotic and some pain meds "just in case". I haven't had any pain yet that a tylenol wouldn't cover so those meds will be added to the SHTF stash. No sense letting a good dental emergency go to waste. :)

Re: Checkups, Teeth Cleanings and Eye Appts. before SHTF
Question? Does everyone think that these practitioners will disappear from the planet when TSHTF.
I too had my work done last year, but I was curious as to why everyone assumes that after the splat there will not be dentist. My medical internist has already begun to switch to 'underground' appointments for PM's or barter from his long time patients. Hell my wife will be without job and insurance for the next three years, and he said he would treat her for free and give her sample meds during that period. |
Re: Checkups, Teeth Cleanings and Eye Appts. before SHTF
no, medical practioners won't disapppear from the face of the earth
but how much do they ( and we ) depend on medical technology ? what if the power grid goes down ? the old stereotype of the country doctor with his little black bag is gone and what about medication refills after TSHTF ? stock up on your medications NOW !! i myself, am re/searching Cumadin and it's substitues/different names |

If SHTF is anything like what my Grandma tells me about the Great Depression then more elective things like having my son's wisdom teeth removed just won't happen. I'd rather get it done now than wish I had later. |

So many here root for the collapse and think that things will be better after it. Such foolish thinking from small minds.
Be prepped? You bet. But if the $$ collapses, along with the economy, the 75 yr. life span will drop quickly to 50. That is the reality of it, and few accept that fact. Do your preps now, but find a MD that is aware, and will be there for you when the crap hits the fan. And don't count on living to 80 in the rocking chair... |
Re: Checkups, Teeth Cleanings and Eye Appts. before SHTF
Agreed, the old saying was life is nasty, brutish, and short. If things get as bad as they may, it's possible we'll see a return to that.
When a 50 year old man is considered ancient because few people live that long. Looking around these past few years, I'm not optimistic. |
Re: Checkups, Teeth Cleanings and Eye Appts. before SHTF
Haven't looked- what's Ferfal say about post shtf health care? How about our Russian friends?
Ant is right to get squared away, but I submit shtf is no good motivator to see to the family's health. What I really want to know is: what's everybody doing for health insurance? We just transitioned to the "duck" supplimental insurance and cut conventional. With the "duck" you don't get increases in coverage cost unless you want to bump. We went this route because (1) we don't visit doctors, and (2) we hate dealing with insurers and their legalese. Rather pay our own way. Besides, we figure we'll be in the "uninsured" majority PDQ. |
